Shockwave Therapy for Achilles Pain: Is It Worth It?
September 14, 2026
Achilles tendon pain (back of the heel or lower leg) is common, especially for runners and active people. Some clinics offer shockwave therapy, but does it really work?
A recent review of the best studies (March 2026) found:
- Shockwave therapy does not provide meaningful pain relief or improve daily function.
- It worked no better than fake (sham) treatments.
- No difference for pain near the heel or in the middle of the tendon.
- Different machines (radial or focused) didn’t help, and in rare cases, focused shockwave caused serious tendon ruptures.
Bottom line: Shockwave therapy shouldn’t be a standard treatment.
At OPTI, we focus on proven, safe methods:
- Guided strengthening exercises
- Proper load management (avoiding too much too soon)
- Hands-on techniques and movement advice
These strategies help your tendon get stronger without expensive, unproven machines.
If you’re struggling with Achilles pain, skip the shockwave. We’ll create a personalized plan to help you move and feel better, based on real evidence.
