The Importance Of Being Intentional During Warm-Up

Warming up is more than just going through the motions and loosening up.  It’s about preparing mentally and physically for competition in order to optimize performance, promote team cohesion, and reduce the risk of injury.

Practice and games do not start when the whistle blows…they start when you step onto that field and start moving during your warm up.  This mindset will allow you to maximize the effect of your warm up and make you feel more confident and ready to play!

Being intentional with your technique during warm up ensures that all muscle groups are adequately activated, reducing the risk of strains and sprains.  It also enhances your motor skills and overall coordination, “waking up” the nervous system in preparation for competition.

When you are focusing on how your moving, it is increasing your overall body awareness and getting your mentally prepared for the technical and tactical components of a training session or game.  The repetition in the warm up allows for better neuromuscular control or muscle memory, which can lead to better execution in a game.

Finally, performing the warm up with your team in synchrony sets the tone for bringing the team together and promotes a sense of unity.  Afterall, you are all in this together!

Remember, don’t waste those limited minutes you have before the game just trying to “get through” the warm up so you can play.  Consider that precious time to get you prepared mentally and physically so that you can perform at your best!
