How Belief Can Boost Physical Well-Being
In the 2007 study “Mind-Set Matters: Exercise and the Placebo Effect,” researchers Crum and Langer explored how beliefs about physical activity can influence health outcomes even without changes in actual behavior.
They studied a group of hotel housekeepers who, despite engaging in physically demanding work, didn’t perceive their job as “exercise.” One group was informed that their daily work met the Surgeon General’s recommendations for physical activity, while a control group was not given this information.
Four weeks later, the informed group showed significant improvements in health markers including weight, body fat percentage, blood pressure, and BMI even though their activity levels hadn’t changed. The study suggests that simply believing you are engaging in healthy behaviors can lead to real physiological benefits, demonstrating the power of mindset and the placebo effect in health and wellness.
At Omaha Physical Therapy Institute, we recognize that mindset plays a powerful role in recovery and just like the study suggests, when you believe in the process and stay positive, your body is more likely to follow.
