Fight Sitting with Movement!

In today’s world, the sedentary lifestyle is real. Let’s face it, between sitting at our desks, our cars, or in front of the television, times have changed. Technology today has allowed for most tasks to be at our fingertips, which in return, has also caused an increase in sitting.

Research has shown that sitting or living a sedentary lifestyle, increases the incidence of cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.

What can you do? Desk jobs may seem like a battle lost, however there are things that can be done to fight against the sitting life!

  1. Stretch – Make stretching a part of your daily routine… even while you are at your desk! Stretching helps to keep your blood flowing, increase flexibility, and allows for a better posture!
  2. Take a walk – Instead of surfing the web or sitting to eat your meal during your lunch hour, go for a quick walk outside or around the office for 10-15 minutes. You could also try drinking more water during the day. The more you drink, the more you will have to use the restroom, which forces you to get up out of your desk and take a walk!   Walking will help get your blood flowing and can increase productivity and mood.
  3. Find opportunities to move- Move your trash can further from your desk, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or make it a point to stand up anytime you are on the phone at your desk if the phone call does not require a computer.
  4. Buy a standing desk – It is not difficult to find a cheap standing desk! It is extremely beneficial to change your position while at work. According to Marc Hunley, physical therapist at OPTI, “We are constantly educating patients on the fact that the best posture is one that constantly changes. Movement throughout the day is key in reducing the risk of developing pain as well as several serious diseases.”

So fight sitting with movement!  It could save your life!
