Exercise As A Treatment for Depression

Exercise has proven to be an effective tool in managing and alleviating depression. Physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins, often referred to as “feel-good” hormones, which help improve mood and reduce feelings of sadness. Additionally, exercise can increase the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which play a key role in regulating mood and emotional well-being. Regular exercise also helps reduce the physiological effects of stress, such as muscle tension and elevated cortisol levels, both of which are often heightened in individuals with depression. Furthermore, engaging in physical activity promotes better sleep, boosts energy, and enhances overall self-esteem, all of which contribute to a positive mindset. Whether through walking, jogging, yoga, or strength training, exercise provides a natural, accessible way to manage depression and improve mental health.
