❄️ Does Ice Really Help After an Injury?

If you’ve ever sprained an ankle, pulled a muscle, or had surgery, you’ve probably been told to “ice it.” Using ice or cold packs, called cryotherapy, has been a go-to treatment for decades to help reduce pain and swelling after an injury.

But a new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine looked closely at whether ice actually speeds up recovery and the results might surprise you.

💡 What the Study Found

Researchers compared different types of cold treatments to see how much they helped with:

  • Pain relief

  • Swelling

  • Range of motion (movement)

  • Overall function and recovery

Here’s what they discovered:

  • Ice does help with short-term pain relief after an injury.

  • It may also help with swelling a little bit, but not as much as many people think.

  • When it came to how well people moved or functioned afterward, the differences between using ice and not using it were pretty small.

In other words, ice can make you feel better in the moment, but it’s not a magic fix for healing.

🏃‍♀️ What This Means for You

Using ice after an injury can still be helpful, especially in the first few days to calm pain and manage swelling.
However, the most important part of recovery usually comes from gentle movement, exercise, and physical therapy as soon as it’s safe to start.

Think of ice as a short-term helper, not the main treatment.
